Exploring Victorian Gardening:
Think curves, carpets and color. Who were the garden tastemakers of the 1800s? The period has been called "The Refinement of America." Why do some garden historians call us "The New Victorians?" This lecture explores the development of a the 19th century American landscaping style from formal to romantic to picturesque.
Marta's books have explored the gardening interests of two very different writers from the period: Emily Dickinson and Beatrix Potter. Yet their garden styles were similar, even though on opposite sides of the pond.
